We are all working towards our dreams, big and small, and I’m pleased to share with you a dream I’ve had for many years which recently came to fruition. I went under contract for the sale of my house in Boulder last month, after 16 years of remodeling and creative projects to bring to life my complete vision for it.
Why am I sharing this with you? Because investing in your living space or in real estate is an effective way to build wealth, diversify your finances, and create a beautiful environment for family and friends to enjoy. Better yet, putting your money and time into home improvements is something you can do without quitting your day job while substantially increasing the equity in your house. Some people successfully do quick fix and flips while others make improvements over the long term, and I’m a veteran of both methods. I’ve discovered over the years that I prefer the longer 5-to-10-year approach in which you are both living in the house and continually improving it. You can create a more beautiful environment when you take the time to live in the space and figure out what design aspects enhance the comfort and the look of your home. It also makes the most sense from a financial aspect because you are making capital improvements, your real estate is appreciating, and you can utilize long term tax benefits.
I bought my house in 2006 and have been making improvements, large and small, for 16 years. Remodeling a house always has challenges, but overall, it’s been a joy to see my house evolve into the complete vision I’ve always had for it. And now I want to share it with you…
