Another Volatile Week for the Market

October 18, 2022

In the last three business days (Thurs, Fri, & Mon), the stock market has experienced very choppy price movements with a rollercoaster of large drops and rallies but seemingly directionless. It’s indicative of the confusion investors are feeling toward the future direction of stocks.

When the market is this erratic and staying within a trading range it’s best not to put much weight behind any of these moves. No one knows if the next major market move will be to the downside or upside and the stock market isn’t giving investors many signals. The best course of action is to wait and see if this rangebound market breaks out in one direction or the other with the slew of earnings reports coming this week and next. Analysts are expecting a bad earnings season but I’m leery of the expectations because of the hotter than anticipated inflation report last week. The economy still seems to be strong and keeping inflation at elevated levels which leads me to believe that corporate profits will be reasonable.
